BorgWarner has introduced the 800-volt HVH320 motor, which uses rare earth magnets and an aluminum induction rotor, to reduce the use of heavy rare earths in commercial electric vehicles. The company achieved this goal through system optimization and life cycle analysis. David Fulton, director of rotating electric machines at BorgWarner Powertrain Systems, said that the current design of electric drive systems requires a trade-off between cost and sustainability.
