Technology consultancy Omdia noted that while Nvidia dominates the AI chip space, AMD is catching up. Omdia estimates that Facebook's parent company Meta Platforms, Inc. purchased 173,000 AMD MI300 processors in 2024, while Microsoft purchased 96,000. AMD released its "Instinct MI300X," an accelerator designed for AI and high-performance computing (HPC) a year ago, when Amazon's cloud computing service provider AWS expressed its desire to deploy it in the cloud. However, according to Amazon insiders, market demand was not enough for AWS to deploy the chips. In response, an AMD spokesperson told Seeking Alpha via email that the statement that Amazon executives believed that its AI accelerators "have not yet" seen a lot of demand was "incorrect." The spokesperson said AMD has a good relationship with AWS and the company is actively looking for AI business opportunities with AWS and end customers.
