New electrically pumped laser operates stably on silicon, providing new possibilities for silicon photonics

0
For the first time, the team of scientists has achieved the stable operation of an all-silicon-element electrically pumped continuous-wave laser on a silicon base. This new laser requires only very low current input and its power consumption is comparable to that of a light-emitting diode. It uses an advanced multi-quantum well structure and ring geometry design, which effectively reduces power consumption and heat generation.
