New breakthrough in silicon photonics: Successful development of all-silicon-element electrically pumped continuous-wave semiconductor laser

A team of scientists at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Jülich in Germany has successfully developed the first all-silicon-based electrically pumped continuous-wave semiconductor laser. The laser is grown directly on a silicon wafer and is expected to be compatible with traditional CMOS chip manufacturing technology and suitable for seamless integration into existing silicon manufacturing processes.
