Tenstorrent, a chip design company led by renowned chip designer Jim Keller, will reportedly start operations in Japan to design cutting-edge semiconductors. Tenstorrent also plans to outsource the production of semiconductors to Rapidus, a Japanese chipmaker. Tenstorrent was founded in 2016 and is led by CEO Jim Keller, who has designed chips at Apple, AMD and Tesla. In December last year, the company announced a $693 million investment from Bezos and other investors. Tenstorrent plans to open an operating base in Tokyo as early as this month and plans to have about 40 designers by the end of 2025, who will be trained in the United States. The company aims to form a development team of about 100 designers as soon as possible. In Tokyo, Tenstorrent will design chips for customers for autonomous driving technology and robot control - an area where Japanese companies have an advantage. The company expects increasing demand for 3-nanometer line width chips as well as next-generation 2-nanometer products. Tenstorrent has partnered with Rapidus on semiconductors in the field of artificial intelligence. The company will consider outsourcing large-scale production of chips designed for customers to the Japanese government-backed partner. Rapidus may also attract new customers through its partnership with Tenstorrent.
