BMW Group establishes competence center for battery cell recycling in Bavaria

The BMW Group has announced that it will build a new Cell Recycling Competence Center (CRCC) in Kirchlot, Bavaria. The new center will use a technology called "direct recycling" that will enable the "mechanical disassembly of battery production waste and entire cells into valuable components." Markus Falbomer, head of battery production at BMW AG, said that with this new Cell Recycling Competence Center, their in-house expertise has been added another component. The BMW Group will invest approximately 10 million euros in the establishment of this competence center, and construction is expected to begin in the second half of 2025. Once completed, the validation of the recycling process in near-series production will begin immediately.
