Honda recently publicly demonstrated for the first time its self-developed all-solid-state battery mass production demonstration production line at its technical institute in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The main purpose of this production line is to conduct technical verification of the mass production process of all-solid-state batteries, and it will also determine the basic specifications of the battery cells. Keiji Otsu, Honda's head of research and development, said the production line will be put into use in January 2025. It is expected that by 2030, Honda's solid-state batteries will be mass-produced, and their range will be twice that of current lithium-ion batteries. By 2040, this number will further increase to 2.5 times. This means that by 2029, Honda's electric vehicles may be able to travel 600 miles (about 966 kilometers) on a single charge. At present, the cost of solid-state batteries accounts for about 30% of the cost of the whole vehicle. Honda plans to reduce the cost of all-solid-state batteries by 25% by 2030 and by 40% by 2040. In addition, Honda also plans to gradually carry new solid-state batteries in new models starting in the late 2020s, and consider using them on motorcycles and airplanes. Honda also said that they are willing to sell the solid-state batteries produced by the factory to other brands so that more users can enjoy the convenience brought by electric vehicles.
