A security breach at software company Cariad left the location information of about 800,000 electric cars sold in Europe by the Volkswagen Group (including Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda) exposed on the Internet for months. The leaked data linked the owner's location information with personally identifiable information, such as the owner's name. Cariad made an emergency fix after being notified by the hacker group Chaos Computer Club. The company said in an interview that the problem was caused by a "configuration error" and stressed that the company would not merge the data to generate personal profiles.
