The Development History of Steer-by-Wire Technology

147
Steer-by-wire technology, also known as Steer-By-Wire, is an advanced automotive steering system that eliminates the traditional mechanical connection and realizes the unfettered transmission of steering commands. The development of this technology can be traced back to 1894, when the first modern steering system with a steering wheel was installed on a passenger car. Since then, the steering system has roughly gone through five stages: the early pure mechanical steering system, the hydraulic power steering system first proposed by Ford, the electronic hydraulic power steering system first introduced by Toyota, the new generation of electric power steering system, and the wire steering system that gets rid of the mechanical connection and the front wheel active steering system with active steering function.
