TSMC's Japanese subsidiary JASM has started the land preparation project for the second wafer factory (Kumamoto 2) on the east side of its Kumamoto 1 factory in Kyushu, Japan. According to the plan, the construction phase of Kumamoto 2 will start in the second half of 2024 and will be put into operation before the end of 2027. The monthly production capacity of Kumamoto 1 and Kumamoto 2 is expected to exceed 100,000 12-inch wafers. Kumamoto 1 was officially put into use in February this year, with a production capacity of 22/28nm and 12/16nm. The area of Kumamoto 2 is expected to be 1.5 times that of Kumamoto 1, with a total investment of 2.2 trillion yen (about 99.7 billion yuan). It is expected to be put into operation before the end of 2027 and will have quasi-advanced process manufacturing capabilities of 6/7nm.
