ON Semiconductor Acquisition History

In 2011, ON Semiconductor acquired the CMOS image sensor business unit of Cypress Semiconductor. Cypress's custom CMOS sensors are used in ARRI professional digital cameras. Movies shot with ARRI cameras, lenses and lighting systems have repeatedly won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Cinematography and other awards. In 2014, ON Semiconductor acquired Aptina, whose predecessor was Photobit, the first company to commercialize CMOS founded by Eric Fossum, the inventor of CMOS image sensors. In 2018, ON Semiconductor successfully expanded its technical strength in 3D imaging, radar and LiDAR (laser radar) by acquiring SiPM and SPAD supplier SensL.
