Autonomous driving technology is developing rapidly, but it still faces many challenges

According to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the total number of self-driving road test vehicles registered in California in 2023 is 1,603, an increase from 1,553 in 2022 and 1,174 in 2021. Among them, the total number of vehicles of Cruise, Waymo and Zoox accounts for 80% of the total. Despite the rapid development of autonomous driving technology, the number of takeovers is still relatively high, mainly due to perception and prediction problems. For example, in complex road environments, autonomous vehicles may not be able to correctly identify the behavior of pedestrians or vehicles, thus triggering takeover. In addition, regulations and ethical issues are also one of the challenges facing autonomous driving technology.
