Rapidus, a Japanese foundry, recently announced plans to use robots and artificial intelligence technology to build a fully automated 2-nanometer process production line in northern Japan. Prototype manufacturing of 2-nanometer chips is expected to start next year and may be put into mass production as early as 2027. It is reported that the factory started construction in Hokkaido in September last year and is expected to complete external construction in October this year. It will then start building an internal clean room and install Japan's first extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography system in December. Rapidus' goal is to start mass production of cutting-edge 2-nanometer chips for artificial intelligence applications in 2027, reducing chip delivery time to one-third of its competitors through fully automated production.
