WeRide gets approval to test self-driving cars with passengers in California

WeRide, a Chinese self-driving startup, has received approval from California utility regulators to test passenger-carrying driverless cars in the state. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) issued a three-year license earlier this month, allowing WeRide to use test vehicles for passenger transportation, with or without a driver present. However, WeRide cannot provide passenger services to the public or charge any fees. Currently, WeRide operates 12 self-driving vehicles in California, mainly in San Jose and its surrounding areas.
