Waymo launches sixth-generation Waymo Driver system

Alphabet's Waymo has launched its sixth-generation autonomous driving system, which uses a more efficient sensor configuration. Although the new system has a reduced number of cameras and LiDAR sensors, its safety performance has not been reduced. The new system has accumulated thousands of miles of driving experience in the real world and is expected to be ready for consumer service in about half the time. The sixth-generation Waymo Driver system is based on Geely Zeekr's electric van. The new system reduces the number of cameras from 29 to 13 and the number of LiDAR sensors from 5 to 4. Through overlapping fields of view and safety redundancy design, it can maintain good performance even in all weather conditions.
