Ampere Computing LLC, a semiconductor startup backed by Oracle Corp. founder Larry Ellison, is considering a possible sale, according to people familiar with the matter. The Santa Clara, California-based company designs semiconductors using Arm technology. People familiar with the matter said Ampere is willing to negotiate a possible deal with a larger industry player. This suggests that Ampere does not see an easy path to an initial public offering. Although the company will benefit from the ongoing artificial intelligence boom, market competition is intensifying, with several large technology companies scrambling to develop the same types of chips that Ampere produces. Ampere is also considering that it may still choose to remain independent. They added that while the company is no longer seeking an IPO in the near term, it has not ruled out the possibility of a future listing.
