German carmakers face rare earth shortage

German carmakers are struggling with a shortage of rare earths that could affect their production plans. BMW, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz have all said they are monitoring the situation closely and taking steps to secure supplies of rare earths. However, the problem is not easy to resolve as 92% of refined rare earths come from China and the country has imposed de facto export restrictions on Western countries.
