Tesla Autopilot safety questioned

While Tesla claims its Autopilot system is nine times safer than that of American drivers, this comparison has been criticized by some experts. Professor Philip Koopman, an autonomous driving safety expert at Carnegie Mellon University, stated that Tesla's direct comparison of Autopilot mileage with the average American driving mileage is a classic case of "comparing an apple to an orange." He pointed out that the use cases for Tesla's Autopilot and FSD are limited; the vast majority of Autopilot mileage is accumulated on highways, where, although speeds are higher, the traffic environment is relatively simple.
