Although BYD considered producing battery cells at its Szeged plant in Hungary to supply its electric vehicle production, it ultimately decided to transport power battery cells from China to Szeged. Currently, BYD plans to assemble imported battery cells into battery modules and battery packs at the Szeged plant and then load them into electric vehicles. No chemical activities will be carried out in the Hungarian plant. The main reason for this decision is that graphite negative electrodes, one of the important raw materials for batteries, must be shipped from Asia to Hungary, which means that the cost of shipping raw materials to Hungary to manufacture battery cells or shipping finished battery cells to Hungary is not much different. Choosing the latter will also save the cost of building a new battery plant.
