In July 2023, Rohm announced that it had reached a basic agreement with Solar Frontier, a solar cell production subsidiary of Idemitsu, based on its two existing 6-inch silicon carbide wafer fabs, to acquire the assets (plants and land) of its solar panel manufacturing plant "Kunotomi Plant (Kunotomi Town, Miyazaki Prefecture)" in October 2023 and turn it into an 8-inch silicon carbide power semiconductor production base. According to the plan, the new 8-inch silicon carbide power semiconductor plant aims to start production at the end of 2024 and will become Rohm's third silicon carbide power semiconductor production base after Miyazaki City and Chikugo City, Fukuoka Prefecture. Rohm has already obtained many customers such as Semikron Danfoss, BMW, Mazda, United Automotive Electronics, Lucid, Zhenqu, Vitesco Technologies, Geely Automobile, etc.; in terms of silicon carbide customers, there are 39 in China, 24 in Europe, 14 in the United States, 43 in Japan, and 18 in other countries. In June 2023, Rohm also announced that German automotive parts giant Vitesco Technologies had signed a long-term supply partner contract for silicon carbide power semiconductors, and the transaction volume will reach more than 130 billion yen during the period 2024-2030.
