GlobalFoundries, a world-renowned wafer foundry, recently announced that it will invest $16 billion in the United States to upgrade its semiconductor manufacturing and advanced packaging capabilities in New York and Vermont. The investment aims to strengthen chip manufacturing capabilities in the United States while accelerating the implementation of the "chip reshoring" strategy. GlobalFoundries plans to spend about $13 billion to expand the Fab 8 factory in Malta, New York and upgrade the Burlington factory in Vermont, and support the newly established New York Advanced Packaging and Silicon Photonics Center. The remaining $3 billion will be used for cutting-edge technology research and development, including key innovation areas such as advanced packaging, silicon photonics and next-generation gallium nitride devices. GlobalFoundries said that this investment will help meet the urgent need for the United States to have an independent and controllable chip supply chain in key areas such as defense, communications, automobiles, and healthcare.
