The role of the camshaft in the engine

406
The camshaft is a metal rod with multiple disc-shaped cams. What role does it play in engine operation? It is primarily responsible for opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves. As the camshaft rotates, driven by the crankshaft, the cams continuously press down on the valves (rocker arms or push rods), thereby controlling the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves.
