MediaTek’s automotive product development history

18
MediaTek started developing automotive chips in 2016. In 2018, MediaTek launched the MT2712 chip for smart cockpits, which is benchmarked against Qualcomm's second-generation 820A chip. Using the older 28nm process technology, which is one level lower than Qualcomm's 14nm process of 820A, it has still been recognized by automakers such as Volkswagen, Hyundai, and Audi, and has been installed on the brands' mid- and low-end models. By 2019, Qualcomm's third-generation 8155 chip "came out of nowhere". In order to "block" Qualcomm, MediaTek also released the smart cockpit chip MT8666 in the same year. The chip uses a 12nm process, supports VOS virtual machines, and three-screen displays for instruments, central control, and co-pilot. It is reported that MediaTek's cumulative shipments in the fields of smart cockpits and Internet of Vehicles have exceeded 15 million.
